Here we discuss how to make your Canvas pages accessible, with a focus on the content you directly enter in the Canvas text editor, such as your syllabus, pages, announcements, assignment instructions, and quizzes. Note that for any files you upload to Canvas, please follow the instructions in the relevant sections to make them accessible.

Use Built-in Section Headings and Lists

If your content has section headings or lists, make sure you apply the corresponding options in the Canvas text editor. For example, you can use the “Paragraph” dropdown menu to select different heading levels (e.g., Heading 2, Heading 3, etc.). For lists, you can use the “Bulleted List” or “Numbered List” options to create unordered or ordered lists, respectively.

When adding links to your Canvas pages, use informative link text that describes the destination or purpose of the link, such as “Assignment 1” or “Course Syllabus.” Avoid using generic link text like “click here” or “read more.”

Use of Color

Do not use only color to convey information. If you use colored text, make sure there is sufficient contrast. See Use of Colors for more information.

Add Alt Text to Images

All images should have alt text. Recall that the alt text is not stored in the image file itself, so you need to add alt text in the Canvas text editor. After you insert the image, click on the image and choose Image Options. You can then enter the alt text in the “Alternative Text” field.

For how to write alt text, see Images and Alt Text.

Use Equation Editor for Math

Use the built-in equation editor in Canvas to create mathematical equations. To use the equation editor, you can click Insert > Equations. This will ensure that the equations are accessible to screen readers. Avoid using images of equations.
